Sonography students attending a Diagnostic Medical Sonography program in Hartford, Connecticut appreciate the historical significance of this city with 125,000 residents. Hartford is the capital of Connecticut and one of the oldest U.S cities. That explains why it holds many of the nation’s oldest public sites, like the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. There are plenty of other attractions where ultrasound students can take a break, like Bushnell Park, a city oasis, or Hartford Stage.

Ultrasound Education in Hartford, Connecticut

Hartford has a small community of almost 5,700 college and university students. There are three CAAHEP accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography programs in 2017 near Hartford. The best programs are the CAAHEP accredited sonography programs because the programs are reviewed for quality and program requirements to ensure students are taught the information they need to pass the ARDMS certification exams.

The Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven offers CAAHEP accredited ultrasound program. It is a short and easy 40-mile drive on Interstate 91, making it quite accessible to Hartford sonography students. Completing a general or cardiac sonography training program at Yale-New Haven leads to a Certificate in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. A general concentration includes abdominal, physics, and obstetrics and gynecology. The cardiac concentration covers adult echocardiography. Financial aid is not available through the ultrasound certificate program, but students should pursue private scholarships if they need help paying for program costs.

If the Yale-New Haven Hospital ultrasound certificate program does not meet your needs, the Gateway Community College in New Haven offers an Associate Degree in Vascular Sonography and General Sonography. The degree program is also accredited by CAAHEP. If you want to study in Massachusetts, there is a CAAHEP accredited program at Springfield Technical Community College in Springfield, Massachusetts, only 27 miles from Hartford. The community college offers the general concentration sonography program leading to an Associate Degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

Get ARDMS Certification

Students completing one of the CAAHEP accredited programs can sit for the ARDMS credentialing exams. A general concentration student can earn a RDMS credential by taking the exam consisting of the general Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) Exam and a corresponding specialty exam. Specialty exams include abdomen (AB), breast (BR), and obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN). A cardiac concentration student can earn the RDCS credential by taking the SPI exam and the corresponding adult echocardiography (AE) specialty exam. A vascular concentration student can earn the RVT credential by taking the SPI exam and the corresponding vascular technology (VT) specialty exam. Once registered, the ARDMS can help sonographers find free online classes to earn ultrasound CMEs, needed for registration renewal. The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) also offers sonography certification.
