To many students, the thought of attending a Diagnostic Medical School in Virginia as of 2017 sounds quite nice. The good news is that Tidewater Community College offers accredited Associate degrees with a general ultrasound technology concentration. Three other schools also offer the same degree, with a choice of training at Northern Virginia Community College, Piedmont Virginia Community College or Southside Regional Medical Center. All four schools offer CAAHEP accredited training programs in sonography. Students can also take an ARRT recognized ultrasound program at ECPI University. The curriculum teach the proper use of ultrasound equipment to identify human pathologies. Virginia does not require licensing, but all sonographers should obtain ARDMS certification to ensure consideration for the maximum number of positions.
Salaries and Career Outlook for Sonographers in Virginia
There are currently 1,610 Diagnostic Medical Sonographers working in Virginia, but the number of ultrasound jobs is growing. Statistics include long-term estimates a total of 2,000 employed ultrasound technologists in 2024. This represents a 31.6 percent change between 2014 and 2024, which means sonographers will find numerous opportunities. The average annual sonographer salary in 2016 was $72,250 according to federal statisticians.
