The Gulf State of Louisiana is unique in every way, from the Cajun food to the Create Nature Trail All-American Road. From alligators to the music-filled city of New Orleans, there is something different around every corner. As Louisiana expands its delivery of health care services to rural locations, an ultrasound technician can partner with the excellent medical facilities to enhance diagnostic testing.

Sonography Training Education in Louisiana in 2017
Diagnostic Medical Technology students can attend one of three CAAHEP accredited schools in Louisiana as of 2017. The three schools are Baton Rouge Community College in Baton Rouge, Delgado Community College in New Orleans and Louisiana State University in Eunice. The first school offers an Associates degree program in general sonography. The other two schools offer a certificate in general sonography. Sonography students completing the program can take the ARDMS exams in Abdomen, Obstetrics-Gynecology and Ultrasound Physics. Sonographers have a choice of career paths through employment in hospitals, clinics, physician offices, laboratories and public health facilities. Some graduates choose to work in medical sonography equipment sales.
Salaries and Career Outlook for Sonographers in Louisiana
Louisiana is one of the lower paying states for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers in 2016. The average annual salary for sonographers in Louisiana in 2016 is $56,130, and that is more than $15,000 below the national average. Top paid Diagnostic Medical Sonographers earn over $77,530 annually. However, it should be noted that Louisiana is one of the lower-income states, and that will present excellent opportunities for health professionals as healthcare services are expanded to include uninsured individuals as a result of the Affordable Care Act requirements. With 940 sonographers employed as of 2016, there is plenty of room for growth in the number of positions and especially in service delivery facilities like outpatient clinics. The number of annual openings is currently projected to be 40. | See Job Openings
