Though the state of Wyoming is largely unpopulated, it holds some of the most stunning natural landscapes in the world in locations like Yellowstone Nation Park, and the Grand Teton National Park. The state has plenty of cultural and historical attractions that celebrate the American West, like the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. Of course, everyone living or visiting Wyoming has to see the world-class rodeo presented during the annual Cheyenne Frontier Days festival. The Wyoming population is aging, and the U.S. Census Bureau projects that more than 32 percent of its residents will be 60 years old or older by the year 2030. The health care system is experiencing a growing need for medical services able to be delivered throughout the state in rural and urban locations. The ultrasound technician can help fill medical services gaps.
Ultrasound Technician Education in Wyoming
Wyoming has the lowest population among the 50 states, so it is not surprising that there is only one CAAHEP accredited ultrasound technician program in Wyoming as of 2017. Ultrasound technology students can earn an Associate of Applied Science degree with a general concentration at Laramie County Community College. Located in Cheyenne, the school has structured a six-semester training program that includes classroom instruction and clinical experience. One class is admitted each summer, and enrollment is limited. After completing all required sonography courses and hands-on training, graduates should take the ARDMS examination to become certified sonographers.
Career Outlook and Salary Facts for Sonographers in Wyoming
Wyoming is projected to have 60 positions available by the year 2020 and an annual average of 10 position openings between 2010 and 2020. The 19.4 percent increase in positions is well below the 44 percent increase expected in the U.S. over the same time period. However, the aging population and the national effort to deliver new and non-invasive medical services to everyone in need could lead to a growth in job openings that exceeds projections. The average annual ultrasound technician salary in 2016 in Wyoming was $66,070 that was much lower than the national salary average for this profession. Looking at the tenth percentile, the beginning salary for Wyoming based sonographers was higher at $52,840 than the national average of $48,660 for all sonographers. | See Job Openings
