As of 2017, there are four schools offering CAAHEP accredited Associate and Bachelor degrees in sonography in Washington. Sonography students have a great selection in terms of both ultrasound technology schools and lifestyle. From Seattle and nearby areas on the west coast to Spokane which is close to the Idaho border, sonography students can select a training program at a college, university or community college that best fits their needs. However, to specialize in cardiac or vascular sonography will require attending one of the schools on the west coast. After program completion, it is important to earn sonographer certification by taking the ARDMS certification exams.
Job Outlook and Salary for Sonographers in Washington
There were 1,440 Diagnostic Medical Sonographers employed as of May 2016 according to the federal government. The average wage for sonographers in 2016 was $86,970 which is higher than the national average salary $71,750. One of the top paying metropolitan areas for sonographers in the U.S. is the Kennewick-Richland area. Sonographers are paid an average salary of $104,080 in that area in 2016. The Washington Employment Security Department (ESD) projections indicate there will be 1,960 sonography positions by 2024. Washington state offers job opportunities and high pay to sonographers.
