Education for Ultrasound Technicians in Maryland in 2017

In 2017, any person desiring to become a skilled health professional who uses ultrasound technology to perform non-invasive imaging procedures can consider taking either a non-degree or degree program. A non-degree program can be completed in a little over a year at two prestigious CAAHEP accredited schools. CAAHEP has also accredited Associate degree programs offered by an educational facility located in Takoma Park MD and Columbia MD. Sonographers can choose to specialize in a particular medical area with choices including obstetrics and gynecology, neurosonography, cardio vascular sonography, abdominal sonography and breast sonography. Though Maryland does not require sonographers to be licensed, employers prefer people who have completed an accredited program and obtained voluntary sonography certification through ARDMS by passing a rigorous exam.

Job Outlook and Salaries for Sonographers in Maryland

Maryland sonographers earn excellent salary with the 2016 yearly median wage at $72,180. The more specialty certifications a person holds, the higher the salary. As of May 2016, the U.S. Department of Labor reports 1,370 sonographers are employed in the state. Between 2014 and 2024, the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation projects a growth of 110 annual job openings. However, there is a high probability that employment opportunities will increase beyond expectations for several reasons that include a move away from using non-radiologic procedures, an aging population and increasing employment of sonographers by non-hospital medical and diagnostic facilities. | See Job Openings
