A non-degree program can be completed in a little over a year at two prestigious CAAHEP accredited schools. CAAHEP has also accredited Associate degree programs offered by an educational facility located in Takoma Park MD and Columbia MD. Sonographers can choose to specialize in a particular medical area with choices including obstetrics and gynecology, neurosonography, cardio vascular sonography, abdominal sonography and breast sonography. Though Maryland does not require sonographers to be licensed, employers prefer people who have completed an accredited program and obtained voluntary sonography certification through ARDMS by passing a rigorous exam.
