Little Rock is the capital city of Arkansas and a city on the move. The wealth of activities available include visiting the Arkansas Arts Center, shopping Little Rock’s River Market, and bicycling, walking or jogging the 15-mile Arkansas River Trail. Nicknamed “The City of Roses,” the numerous delightful gardens are a Southern tradition. The hundreds of clinics, hospitals and physician offices offer excellent employment opportunities for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers.
Where to Study Sonography in 2018?
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences-Little Rock offers a sonography degree program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). The training program is accredited for general, cardiac and vascular concentrations, giving students a nice range of options. As of 2018, it is the only program like this in the city, but there are two other ultrasound CAAHEP accredited programs less than 140 miles from Little Rock. Attending one of the CAAHEP accredited programs is the best educational route because students get the didactic and clinical training needed to take the ARDMS exams, which has stringent requirements. Scholarships can help sonography students cover the cost of tuition and fees by supplementing other sources of funds.
Many employers require ARDMS registration before they will consider people for sonography jobs. Little Rock has approximately 14,000 higher education students in the city. They are attending local institutions like the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, to name just two of the area colleges and universities.
Is Career Outlook for Sonographers in Little Rock Attractive?
Diagnostic Medical Sonographers in the Little Rock-North Little Rock-Conway Metropolitan Statistical Area earned annual wages ranging from $45,600 for the bottom 10 percent of earners to $78,520 for the top 10 percent in May 2016. The average annual wages of $62,150 or $29.88 per hour are about 15 percent lower than the national average of $71,750 or $34.49 per hour.
The State of Arkansas Department of Labor indicates the City of Little Rock will see a 22 percent increase in Diagnostic Medical Sonographer positions due to vacancies and new openings for the period 2008 to 2018. This rate could increase as more people obtain health insurance and the health industry focuses on outpatient and non-invasive service delivery. The education and health services industry is already growing as of 2018. | See Job Openings
