Nebraska has many wide open spaces and is famous for its road adventures. You can follow the path of Lewis and Clark or take a westward trails tour. There are numerous byways, music festivals and museums to satisfy every interest. Nebraska’s largely rural setting opens up new possibilities for innovative thinking in the delivery of Diagnostic Medical Sonography services.
Sonography Education in Nebraska in 2017
There are 3 CAAHEP-accredited sonography programs in Nebraska as of 2017. Omaha, Nebraska has two CAAHEP accredited schools. Lincoln, Nebraska has one school offering accredited ultrasound education. The ultrasound technology schools in Omaha give students an opportunity to earn an Associate degree in general sonography, vascular sonography or cardiac sonography, or a Baccalaureate degree with a general concentration. Completing the Baccalaureate program requirements leads to a Bachelor of Science Degree in Radiation Science Technology, and prepares graduates to take ultrasound technician certification in sonographic principles and instrumentation, obstetrics and gynecology, abdomen, and neurosonography. Obtaining ARDMS credentialing is important once studies are completed because it is required by many employers as proof of competency level.
Salaries and Career Outlook for Sonographers in Nebraska
The career outlook for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers is good. The types of workplace settings where sonographers find employment include hospitals and medical centers, physician offices, clinics, public health institutions, outpatient centers, research facilities and in commercial sales.
In 2016, according to the latest statistics, there were 480 sonographers working around the state for an average salary of $65,390 per year. However, the 2014-2024 long term projection of 15.8 percent growth, or 20 positions per year, for job openings is below the national average. Nationally, the job outlook projects a 26.4 percent growth rate. The low number of sonography jobs in Nebraska is likely due to the fact that much of the state is farm land or rural. | See Job Openings
