Sonography Education in San Diego 2018

There are many public and private universities, colleges and technical institutes in San Diego. With total enrollment of over 92,000 students, this is a very education-oriented city. In 2018, the University of California-San Diego Medical Center Sonography Program is the only one in the city accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). It is a 12-month program. CAAHEP accreditation is important because most employers will only consider job applicants who completed a program from an accredited school. Upon graduation from an accredited sonography school, sonography students can take the ARDMS exams to become a certified sonographer.

As of the May 2016, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the average annual salary for an ultrasound technologist in the San Diego metropolitan area in 2016, which includes Carlsbad, was $90,430, which is more than 26 percent higher than the national average annual wage for this profession. This equates to $43.48 per hour. The BLS figures indicate there were 520 Diagnostic Medical Sonographers employed at the time of the survey.
